What Is Medical Micromachining?

As a leader in machined medical components, we have learned to set the bar by prioritizing continued education and specialization in different areas of medical and dental part manufacturing. From different machinery to techniques, SPM sets the standard.

On a global scale, the demand for smaller and smaller components continues to increase, but we’re ready. There’s no part too small for our team, thanks to our collective experience in medical micromachining. It’s time to learn more about medical micromachining and its importance to the industry.

Defining medical micromachining

For SPM,  micromachining is the creation of parts with component diameters up to .7875″ and tight tolerances of ±0.0001 inches. That is why the key to micromachining is precision, precision, precision. Each component must meet precise tolerances and official industry-wide standards within the medical industry to be compliant. This includes ISO certifications like the two SPM maintains, ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016, the latter of which pertains specifically to the medical industry.

Our technology

One of the primary machines SPM uses to produce micromachined medical parts is the Willemin-Macodel Precision Machining Center – Model 408MT. The Willemin is a multi-process machine that offers simultaneous 5-axis production that can mill up to 42,000 rpm and boasts a Dynamic Thermal Stabilization© (DTS) technology that allows for long-lasting, extreme precision.

Examples of medical micromachining

The following complex components are a few of the many different medical micromachining projects we’ve worked on over the past 40 years:
