The Willemin and What it Means for Medical Machining

a close-up view of the Willemin interior

In no other industry is precision more necessary than in the medical and surgical fields. In many cases, the parts manufactured by Swiss Precision Machining, LLC are used in life saving procedures.

We have a long history with high precision medical parts machining. Our roots are in dental and medical and we were on the leading edge in the early 2000s, manufacturing parts for the da Vinci® Surgical System, a robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery (MIS) platform. Our history in medical machining is well documented and you can gain more insight into it at DECO magazine (PDF).

However, it’s 2018 and medicine has advanced since those early days of MIS. As robot assisted MIS becomes more widespread, the need for higher complexity and more precise parts grows. When the medical industry has a need, we do what we can to meet it.

In order to expand our medical machining capabilities and machine parts more efficiently, we recently acquired the Willemin Precision Machining Center – Model 408MT. This multi-process machining center offers simultaneous 5-axis production which means the angles of contact are almost limitless.

So…what can this machine do?

After familiarizing ourselves with the machining center and training our staff on how to operate it, we’ve started machining test components, beginning with highly complex robotic surgical grippers. The test grippers we’ve created would be impossible to create without the Willemin and with the Willemin, these surgical grippers only take minutes to manufacture dropping the part complete with no burrs.

We captured a bit of footage of this machine in action. As the Willemin runs, tools are repeatedly switched out to complete new processes, eliminating the need for other machines in some cases.

If you’d like to learn more about what this machine can do and our new capabilities, feel free to contact us. We’d love to chat!
