In 1962, America met The Jetsons. This family of futuristic travelers stole the hearts of millions, over 40 years ago. Most people wouldn’t have dreamed that the lives of George, Judy, Jane, and Elroy weren’t as far away as they seemed. While we aren’t jet setting through space yet, car technology is evolving at the speed of light with the recent launch of several self-driving vehicles, and SPM is keeping a close eye on this impressive new industry.
Over the last two hundred years, the world has seen a complete revolution in our transportation options. In 1879 Carl Benz was awarded a patent for his one-cylinder two stroke vehicle. Just 24 years later, Ford opened his motor company, selling nearly 1,600 cars in the first year. Over the last few decades, we’ve seen an increase in luxury technologies including rear-view cameras, built-in navigation and more. However, the biggest shift in automotive technology has taken place in just the last 10 years with leading tech-giants like Google and Apple setting out to launch the world’s first self-driving cars. Since then, we’ve seen Tesla, Toyota, BMW, Volvo, Nissan, Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Honda (just to name a few) who are getting into the self-driving car arena.
While many of these manufacturers are investing heavily in the software technology behind self-driving vehicles, it’s important to keep in mind how removing a driver from the driver’s seat creates unique safety challenges for these new units as well. Every part of a self-driving vehicle must be the best possible quality to ensure the safest experience possible and to protect the growing industry. At Swiss Precision Machining, LLC, we’re uniquely positioned to help auto manufacturers as they develop and deliver on this new technology. Our machining team is full service. From the start of a machining project, our team in Chicago is able to help plan, engineer, map out a part build project, customize machining services, finish, deburr and deliver the best-machined parts available. Along the way, our auto manufacturing partners rely on the Swiss Precision Machining, LLC team to deliver updates and support during the entire machining process.
Our team won’t stop machining the future. At SPM, we’re ready and able to help automotive manufacturers take driving to the next level. Before we know it, we’ll be machining cars that can fold up into briefcases. But until then, we’ll watch re-runs of The Jetsons and keep dreaming.
